Being Aware Of Your Gifts

August 28, 2014

After I built the boat desk, I declared to myself that I am a creative type and I need to focus on that. I thought to myself, “Why did I always undervalue this facet of me? So I became introspective.

I started to search through the mental reels of my life to recall other times I had been creative but just took it for granted. I thought about the first thing I ever built. I was in high school and I ordered a kit for a canoe, which I built with a high school friend, in my basement. I christened it, the “Henriette”, after my high school sweetheart.

I launched it in a friend’s swimming pool to  test for leaks before I took it out on the rivers in Missouri where I grew up. So the boat desk was the first thing I ever designed, but it was the second thing I ever built. Building the canoe was the first time I realized I like building things and I was good with my hands.

But I didn’t see the connection between the fun I had building it and the gift of being good with my hands. I didn’t realize that it was a gift I was given and I should develop and nurture it.

Discovering My Creative Nature

August 28, 2014

The Boat Desk

Now as I think about it, this is where it all started for me. This is where I started paying attention to my creative nature. This single event turned me sharply on a journey of self-discovery which I’m still on today.

This is where my interest in design and woodworking began to develop and grow. This is where changes in me were about to happen.

My kids were young (4 and a half and six years old) and were just starting kindergarten and elementary school.

They needed a desk but I didn’t want to just buy them a desk. I decided I’d try to build a desk for them where they could do their homework. But I didn’t want to build them just any desk.

Scanner’s Dilemma: Wanting to do it all

August 28, 2014

I have many interests and they are all appealing to me in their own way. But if I do one thing,  then that means I’m not doing all the other things that scream for my attention and seem to have equal priority. I want to do them all.

It’s like getting on a horse and trying to ride off in all directions. You can’t do that. I wasn’t always this way. I don’t know when this all started. (Or maybe I do.)

Lizz Wright: Doing One Thing Really Well

August 28, 2014

I wanted my first posts to have a somewhat logical sequence and interconnection, as I gradually introduce myself and what my site concerns.

In these posts I’ll be talking about being a scanner, a person with various interests, but with no particular one as  “The Passion”.

I’m always amazed and admire those who have found their passion. They may have other interests but they do the one thing really well. They often become known or well-known for it.

This post is about Miss Lizz Wright,  not only to sing her praises, but also to include her as an example of one who has found her passion and  is living her dream and creating a ripple effect all around her that touches and inspires others.

She is a beautiful and charming young woman who sings a soothing mixture of Jazz, Gospel and Rhythm and Blues.

Welcome to Scanner Brain

August 25, 2014

Hi!……and Welcome to Scanner Brain!

My name is Dennis Adams.

If you listened to the song (above),  you’ll have an idea what a scanner is. The term scanner, coined by Barbara Sher in 1994, in her book, “I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was”,  is defined in her book in great detail. She also lists various types of scanners.  I believe I am a scanner and if your interest is piqued by this,  her book is a must-read.
